Acne nodules are a type of pimples that can be classified under the umbrella term of cystic acne. Types of pimples and how to spot them:

There are two types of pimples, inflammatory acne and non-inflammatory acne.

Blackheads (or closed comedones) develop where skin oil (medical name, sebum) has blocked a pore. The dark colour is not dirt, its black colour is caused by where the lump of sebum has oxidised when it has been exposed to the air. Black heads can often take a long time to fall out as it takes a long time for the sebum and dead skin cells to drain to the skin surface. Blackheads are the number one types of pimples that appear on noses. Blackheads are commonly mistaken to be freckles. Out of all the types of pimple blackheads are arguably the least serious, as they are easy to deal with with using a blackhead extraction tool.

A whitehead is exactly same as a blackhead (a ‘plug’ of solidified sebum), but it is below the skin and since no part of it is in contact with the air it cannot oxidize and so it remains white. White heads can be so small that you often cannot see them in a normal mirror with the naked eye.

Pustules and papules are inflamed acne spots that stick out from the skin and are normally filled with pus that can range in colour from white, green or yellow.

Pustules are often inflamed and this can be seen by the red colour that surrounds them on the skin. Cystic acne is characterised by the presence of nodules or acne cysts and is the most severe type of acne. It is much more likely to cause permanent scarring then the other less severe types of pimples. It is also sometimes referred to as nodular acne.

If you must squeeze your blackheads make sure that you wash your hands before putting them on your face, as you don’t want to be transferring germs into the open pores. Try not to squeeze too hard as this can cause scarring. If the black head doesn’t want to come out easily, don’t force it. Try again in a few weeks and it will probably come out really easily. The body has it’s own mechanism for getting rid of blackheads and clogged pores. That’s why some come out easily and some don’t. Use a clenched knuckle against another clenched knuckle to squeeze them out. Never ever use a fingernail! I have scars from this. Use a gentle rocking motion and they should come out.

You can buy strips from the drug store to remove them if squeezing isn’t your thing, but they are extremely over-priced it’s much cheaper to buy a blackhead extractor tool. This is great for getting rid of blackheads, and is also great for unplugging pores and removing old dead skin. Get a mug and simple crack an egg and get rid of the yolk so you are left with just the egg white. Get a thick paintbrush and apply the mixture to your whole face. Then quickly get some toilet paper and tear in into squares of about an inch. Coat each piece by dipping it in the mixture and layering in on to your face like you would have done as a child doing paper maiche. The only past of your face that should not be covered are the places where you have significant amounts of hair (to avoid pain when you take it off) and the delicate eye area. When the whole of you face is covered relax and let it dry. Afterwards starting at the edge gently peel off the paper. You should notice all the blackhead plugs stick to the mask and simply come off!

Many people I have spoken to have has great results using this technique. However I cannot vouch for it defiantly because I have not used it myself.

Simply crush up some aspirin in warm water until you get a thick paste. Then apply to the nose or wherever you have the black heads. Leave it on for several hours or overnight and the aspirin black head mask should have shrunk the large pores removing some of the clogged comedones. So you’ve got a hot date tomorrow and you’ve been really excited for weeks beforehand looking forward to how nice you’ll look. 5) What ever you do try not to squeeze the spot. I know it’s darn tempting! Popping spots as a ‘quick fix’ can cause permanent ugly scarring. You can even get acne scars from spots that you never touch, so it’s a good idea not to make the odds worse.

Acne can be caused by several things.

Make-up - Some foundations and concealers can block pores (are comedonegenic). This is why it is important to always check the label on the back of the bottle .You can find non pore blocking ones if you shop around.

Hormones. During puberty the body produces a surge of a sex hormone called androgen. This often leads to sebaceous gland to secrete more oil, this excess sebum make acne a lot more likely, as bacteria can breed very rapidly in this oily environment. Stress may make your spots worse. Although many experts are in continued disagreement as to whether or not stress can cause acne, there are some studies which have suggested that if nothing else, being under prolonged stress can cause a weakening of the immune system of the sufferer, which in turn can have the effect of making acne more likely, exacerbating it if it is already present.

High levels of humidity in your house (having too much water in the air) can make you spots worse. This is because most bacteria, particularly those that cause acne, breed most prolifically in a humid, moist environment.

Rubbing or touching the affected skin area can make your zits worse as this is introducing extra bacteria onto the skin in question. Another reason to avoid picking your spots is that it can cause acne scars to form.
